Welcome to the World of Darkness MMORPG Wiki

World of Darkness is a MMORPG based on the setting created by White Wolf Publishing. In development by CCP, this gothic MMOG will be based primarily upon the Vampire: the Masquerade and Vampire: the Requiem lore and emphasizes social interaction and political intrigue between players. Social climbing, backstabbing, and prestation will rule the night. Danger will be ever-present as immortal beings vie for control of vast cities and resources. How you gain power will be up to you and it all begins when you die.

New development info: some 2010 information is no longer in the plans for the game.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the game coming out?

We do not know. The only official answer has been not in 2013 or 2014.

Will there be a subscription fee?

There is presently no information about the game's intended financial model.

When will beta testing begin?

We do not know. No information has been revealed about game-testing.

Will there be a day/night cycle?

There will be no day/night cycle, only night.

What clans will be available for play?

In 2011 they said that the game would include the 7 Camarilla clans as playable. In 2012 at Fanfest that changed to the ’original clans’. We are not yet positive what that means.

Will there be permadeath in the game?

Permadeath will exist, however, only the Prince of a city will have the power to potentially invoke it. It has been speculated that this might require a city-wide blood hunt to be called, but we do not know. At Fanfest 2013 it was said permadeath will be "difficult" to accomplish. It has also been hinted at TGM 2011 that players may be able to agree to fight to the death.

Will it be possible to play something other than a vampire?
Yes, everyone will start the game as a mortal and may choose to be turned into a vampire. However, players may elect to remain a mortal if they wish. It has been stated that mortal characters will not be as powerful as vampire characters. Also at Fanfest 2013 it was stated mortals will not be very fleshed out or a lot of content for them sans an expansion later on.

Will I be able to start as a vampire and can I choose my clan?

You start as a mortal and can choose to become a vampire. As far as we know, you will be able to choose your clan.

Will werewolves and other supernatural creatures be in the game?

Other supernatural creatures will exist in the game as NPCs at launch and their lore will likely be included into the game. They will not be playable until sometime after launch.

Will there be player housing?

Players will have their own havens and these locations will be no-holds-barred, allowing things like full character nudity.

How will the game handle servers and instancing?

The entire game will exist on a single server with no instancing.

Will I be able to use a firearm?

Firearms will be in the game but will not be very powerful towards kindred. The game is biased towards close-range combat.

Will generation play a role in this game?

Generation will be used in some way but not as a replacement for levels.

How will protecting and claiming territory work?

One of the game’s primary goals is amassing territory. We are, however, unsure exactly how these will function.

What resources will the game use?

The game will focus on the acquisition of territory and blood. It was stated at TGM 2011 these are NOT the only 2 resources to fight our however. That’s about all we know for sure.

How will guilds work in WoD?

There is presently no information regarding guilds.

Will traditional PvP and PvE be a part of the game?

PvP and PvE will both be featured in the game. CCP is catering to three gameplay styles they call the ‘Coffeeshop’ (a sort of low-conflict RP and introduction to the game game-style), the Themepark (which will involve their PvE content), and the Sandbox (the focus area of the game centered around player politics and PvP).

How will open world PvP work?

PvP has been said to be more limited in some ways, but more open than in other MMOs. True to the sandbox concept, the game may have some safe (Elysium) areas, but overall there will be no PvP ‘flagging’ that many games have in PvE servers.

Will all vampire disciplines be in the game?

Most likely not. The game will only focus on certain clans at launch and some disciplines (temporis is specifically mentioned) are too difficult to include in the game.

Will players be able to have ghouls and/or retainers?

There is currently no information about ghouls. It is confirmed that you may have or interact with NPCs or Companions in some fashion for the item creation system.

Will I be able to sire other vampires?

Yes, characters who start off as mortals will need to be embraced by players who are already vampires.

MinaRosenthornm, CCP said they want to include "Romance", as one of the themes in the game, maybe they will add RPlaying tools for that. Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption and Anezka appear in my mind right now.

No, you will only be able to become a vampire and all players start as mortal. This may change later after it's been released, with DLC or expansions.

In the game will players have the option of playing as a werewolf, giest, mage, changeling, and promethean or will we be restricted as a human and vampire

Regarding guilds... they will probably be Coteries. We all know these are usually small but for online terms, they will probably change that.

I wonder if they would include a possibility to romance other players...for role play reasons?

No doubt, Vampire: The Masquerade has a greatest Lore and marvelous clans, even those intense and intriguing literary works. I can say nothing about the mechanics in Vampire: The Requiem, I don't know them very well, but that part's not important, maybe you could play a game with the best rules and mechanics, but if the rest is not interesting, you're going to say "next" sooner than later.

The Masquerade mechanics and lore is much better than Requiem when it comes to player creation and the clans. Req vamps seem much less social then their Masq counterparts

It's funny how some people is very concerned about the same and I don't mean Permadeath. I'm referring that subject about Layoffs, that was several months ago, they're hiring more people just for WoD some time ago.

I have been trying to contact PM Seven, but for some reason I cannot compose a message. Instead I will state it here. Being able to sire vampires has been stated that to encourage interaction, players will Embrace other players. So the question: "Will I be able to sire other vampires?" should be "Yes, but we are unsure how it will function in game terms."

I'm very glad though that they are spending so much time on this. The world that they're trying to portray really deserves the effort. I guess I also just wish that CCP would give us more than tiny, vague tidbits of info in interviews and tweets, one or two demo videos showing off cloth and hair physics (though that was cool), and the odd leaked image after all this time. Heck, the main page on their website concerning the WOD MMO has nothing on it except a job page and two articles, one about t

I am curious if CCP laying off 20% of their worldwide staff in fall of 2011 will greatly effect our chances of seeing an MMO. Found this article http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/19/ccp-layoffs-affect-20-of-worldwide-staff-company-focusing-on-e/ from a forum post that states they would drop 20% of their worldwide staff, mostly in Georgia offices, White Wolf area. Apparently, the MMO will "continue development with a significantly reduced team."

do people actually read these threads? i see people making the same comments and raising the same concerns over and over again, in spite of those issues having already been addressed numerous times. once again, for those of you who are worried about the PvP/final death system, CCP has given us every indication that the system will not be arbitrary, but instead will be directed specifically toward those players who deserve/choose it. How many times do we have to say this?

ccP chris keeps flip flopping.
first he gripes, that most of the games development personel, have been moved to dust and/or eve. and that will cause the game to be OMG severely delayed *dramatic*.
then he ambiguously gripes, that WoD is not expected to take huge amounts of additional time to develop,
because they seemingly want to compensate for the lower manpower, by releasing the game without many of its more complex "redundant" features. then he says that they still have a "AAA" team work

Very intriguing. I feel that this MMO will revolutionize gaming as a whole. Luckily for any WoD fans, Roleplaying isn't an issue. The only problem I see with this whole idea is: How are you going to keep out the riff-raff? I mean, if final death can only be done through a consensual duel, how will the people causing immersion problems learn their lesson?

I feel that the perma death is most certainly a element you only get if you want to duel one another to perma death.

Reading between the lines on perma death is looking like it is consentual duel to the death. If you are PK'd or something, you likely enter torpor.

Don't want final death to come your way unnecessarily in public, private or otherwise? Walk with friends and carry a piece.

I am going to have to agree with Xenith on the subject of Sw:ToR. I am sad to say though that currently there will be no day and night cycle.

Chris doesn't know what he's talking about in regards to SW:ToR unfortunately. No offense Chris :). I've been in the beta for quite sometime and more most of the game does require grouping.

Can you change the page so that it is, you know, readable? Black on dark gray may be cool with the 13 year old crowd and all, but for those of us who don't live in a basement this page is very difficult to read.

What I'm more concerned about is the OTHER elements of WOD. Screw vampires, I want to be a hunter.

I guess the perma death needs to be a huge concern. Something to fear. But not something that will drive people away once their character dies. Maybe one's dead character enters a slumber, making the character unplayable for a fixed amount of time (a day?).

One thing I would want to see is the abolish of general chat. Nothing takes me out of the game as bad as people trolling on the chat, making unfunny jokes or just being annoying. If you want to have a general chat, make it accessable via a

Permadeath and FFA pvp... let's see it in action first, before we condemn it. Let's see how easy it is for a social player to die to a pvp-oriented one first? I'm sure a good social player will have his ways of escaping threats.

Ah this sounds great! Diablerie? Yep thats what its all about. Im sure its going to be quite difficult. I just hope that PVP and Final Death won't ruin this game.

WOW i am a Huge Fan of World of darkness (vampire most of all). And i love how this Sound's the only thing is i am not sure about Final Death. I mean how would it feel having a Character for like a Year and then some one killing him/her. I do want death to be important but i hope they find some thing that wont kill the game. other then that i hope this comes out very soon.

I want to add something in this itens.
Or make a ULTRA VERY HIGH HUGE World, or put thousands servers for low population.
Remmember: 1 Vampire for each 100.000 habitants. Remmember: All Canaile Society, is very small

I can't quite understand why people are going crazy over the Final Death thing without having any idea what conditions will have to be met for it to occur. Though I'm willing to bet anything that it is tied intrinsically to enabling player justice: that certain vampires may be ‘tagged’ as deserving of Final Death, and that those who choose to undertake actions which put them at such odds with the Camarilla will understand very well what they are doing. Tell me you can't basically invent a system

I welcome the idea of full PvP and permanent death, the PK scenario explained by Lector might be possible. Though I do believe the developers has this in mind while making the game. And since this game seems to aims to become an actuall ROLE playing game, not just a hack ´n slash type mmo like so many before it, we as players will need to embrace (no pun intended) that situation. If violent vampires (PK characters) starts to roam the streets, then you would have to play more carefully. When you

CCP is the ONLY mmo developer,
who would add enough complexity,
to the world of darkness mmo,
to do the world of darkness,
any justice.

the world of darkness,
allowed its players,
to make a very wide variety of choices.
that freedom of choice,
was the heart of the system.

not only did ccp SAVE whitewolf from the jaws of certain bankruptcy.
(the new world of darkness suckled.)

ccp went a step further,
and made itself the only development company,

your felling about final death aren't rational...
Imagine, the 12year-old nerd who creat his bruja just for PK met an other vampire (any other) thedefender have the possibility to run, or he also can use some blood power to dominate or fear the bruja, and in fact if the defender can't run out the battle or win it he will be secure by the potential vampire hunt order of the prince... Cause you must remember that in social interaction a leader must take under control his people and his land and s

Permanent death AND full PVP? That sounds like a recipe for disaster for those that put any kind of time into a character. Somebody that goes the heavy-social route could be running from Elysium to Elysium, praying that some violent 12-year-old doesn't make a Brujah specifically for player killing. If you as the player of that social character built them for 6 months with all these influences, how quick would you be to try it again and hope for the best because of a "LOLZ" player?
